| Everyone needs an editor. |
As a writer myself, I know how true that is. After working hard to put your thoughts into words, you need another pair of eyes to take a look. An editor can give your writing the right tone and help you express yourself with style and clarity.
I work with a variety of genres, so whether it’s a business proposal or letter, a resume, thesis, web copy, short story or novel, I have the expertise to make your writing as clear and professional as it needs to be. It’s not my job to change your unique voice or ideas; I’ll simply ensure that your writing is engaging, clear, and precise.
About
Editing is my geeky passion. There’s something about polishing other people’s prose that appeals to me. Perhaps it’s the result of a lifetime of reading, but I’ve always had a knack for choosing the right word, rearranging confusing sentences, and sorting out grammatical tangles. Transforming good writing into better writing comes naturally to me – and I love to do it.
I learned the official ins and outs of my trade while working in the editorial offices of The New England Journal of Medicine. Farther afield, I edited Peaceworks, the newsletter of the Peace Corps in Morocco; and nothing keeps an editor on her toes like correcting five years worth of high school English essays. Currently, I’m one of the Co-Editors of Creative Nonfiction at Literary Mama, an online magazine.
When I’m not editing other people’s work, I’m a writer myself. My essays have been published in Brain, Child magazine, The Mothers Movement Online ImperfectParent, Mamazine.com and in the anthology MamaPhiles. I also publish Miranda, a zine about motherhood.

As a university professor who has been published in a number of different academic journals, I have worked with many different editors over the years. In my experience, Kate Haas possesses an extraordinary gift for the job. She has a keen intellect, and also a strong sense of intuition that helps her decipher what I'm trying to say, even when I'm not completely sure myself.
She retains a deep respect for my own voice, as well as the intent of the words on the page, and she enriches my writing as she edits it. It's still very much my voice, but a voice that's been steadied and sharpened, made more persuasive and articulate. A few rearranged sentences, a suggested word substitution, the deletion of a few padded phrases or sentences, and my article emerges smooth and polished.

Have you ever the had the experience where you’ve worked hard to write something and have looked at it so many times you’ve lost perspective on it? As a graduate student, I waded through mountains of papers and data, then began writing my thesis. After serveral versions, I couldn’t tell how readable it was. Kate Haas was instrumental in helping me to tell the story of my research in language that was understandable both to scientists and lay people. She helped keep my writing clear, concise, and accurate. Her editing was highly constructive, not critical.

I’m an educator and independent curriculum writer. Recently, I had a contract to research, write and revise a High School science curriculum about fire for a coalition of federal and local organizations. Kate Haas was indispensable in getting this project in shape and out the door.
I needed someone not only to proofread but to do some serious editing. Kate took my lessons and research pieces and made the writing concise and clear. This was extremely important as the curriculum was intended for multiple audiences and bi-state use. I felt comfortable asking Kate for her opinion on my writing and I was completely confident in her technical skills.
Kate is extremely easy to work with and almost clairvoyant in her insight. She is attentive to detail and has a grasp of audience. She knows how to make writing flow! In addition, Kate is very reliable. When I was under deadline, she never let me down. I can honestly say that I would hate to do a project without her.
